PICKERING — Reigning IBO Americas Super Middleweight champion Shakeel ‘The Jamaican Juggernaut’ Phinn will return to action on October 21st, when he will face former WBC and WBA regional champion Rafael ‘La Locomotora’ Sosa Pintos in an eight-round contest at the Pickering Casino Resort presented by Tyler Buxton’s United Boxing Promotions.
Phinn (25-3-1, 16 KO) will aim to build on his unanimous decision win over Ryan Young in May, and make it four wins in four fights since signing with United last July.
“I’m excited for the challenge against a true professional in the sport,” said Phinn, a former Canadian and North American champion. “We’ve been following a good plan since I started with United, after a lay-off the rust is off (and) I’m ready for those big calls when they come.
“A win over Pintos will propel me into the conversation with some of the top guys in the 168-pound division.”
Sosa Pintos (63-18, 25 KO) is a decorated veteran on the South American scene, and October 21st will represent his fourth fight in Canada.
“I can’t wait to be back in front of Canadian fans,” relayed Sosa Pintos from his native Uruguay. “I’ve been to Canada a number of times, it’s a beautiful country (and) people are always wonderful — I am ready to put on a good fight.”
What They’re Saying
Shakeel Phinn on his Casino Debut
I’ve seen the photos and videos on social media, it’s a beautiful place to fight and I’m excited to fight with my United stablemates, earn a good victory against a tough opponent and continue building.
Phinn on Sosa Pintos as an Opponent
He’s fought against everybody and anybody in the sport, and is a come-forward, high-guard type of fighter. He’s given some good fighters trouble, and I want to be one of the ones who puts him away.
Rafael Sosa Pintos on his Career
At this point, my objective is to keep fighting at the highest possible level. I never made it to a world title fight, but I won often and nonetheless at a very good level. Representing my city and my country on the global stage is the honour of a lifetime.
Sosa Pintos on Facing Phinn
I’ve watched a few of his fights, and there is no doubt he will be a strong opponent. He is competent technically and can be explosive. It’s a very interesting challenge, because he does a lot of things well. I’m excited!
